Medieval day at Northop campus

April 24, 2012 by · No Comments · Events

A costume drama highlighting the myth, magic and medicine of medieval times is taking place in Northop this weekend.

Glyndŵr University’s Northop campus is hosting the second in a series of medieval-themed family fun days between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 28 April.

As well as featuring Tangwystle, who will be delivering the magic and medicine presentation, the event will take in a performance from medieval re-enactment group Age of the Princes.

Historical records show the university’s site is more than 700 years old and may once have been home to medieval living quarters.

Kirsty Percival, of Glyndŵr University, said: “This is the second in our series of medieval events planned for the year and it promises to be even bigger and better than our last one in February. Events such as this and the recently announced Gwyl Gobaith festival are part of the university’s commitment towards being a vital community facility in Flintshire and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone on the day.”

The Age of the Princes medieval re-enactment will feature medieval arms and armoury, medicine and surgery, introduction to carding, spinning, bowman and bodger.

The event takes place from 10am to 4pm and is pay on the door. Entry costs £3 for adults and £1.50 for concessions, with under 3s going free.

For further details contact Kirsty Percival at k.percival@glyndwr.ac.uk or on 01978 293590.

Rugby league internationals at the Glyndŵr University Racecourse Stadium

March 28, 2012 by · No Comments · Sports

Wales Rugby League have announced their 2012 senior international schedule which starts with a one-off test match against France at The Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium in Wrexham on Saturday 16th June (kick-off time TBC).

Wales last took on France in October 2010 in Albi when an 86th minute Lloyd White penalty gave Wales a 12-11 win and qualification for the 2011 Four Nations tournament.

The fixture is the culmination of a week’s worth of Rugby League in the town with Glyndwr University set to host the annual British and Irish Student international tournament between Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland from June 11th.

Wales coach Iestyn Harris said he was delighted that his side wouls be getting a summer test-match for the first time since 2001.

“To be able to put on a mid-season test shows a bit of progression to where we’ve come as we’ve not been in the position to do that in years gone by,” he said. “Hopefully this will increase to two or three in years to follow.

“It’s going to be more difficult for us as there are a good number of our squad playing Rugby League in Australia and we won’t be able to call on them for this match. But this means that a number of other players will get the opportunity to play and prove that they are good enough to be in the squad for the end of the year.

“It’s a progression game for us. Can we compete against a very strong French side with a couple of numbers down? It’s an important game for us to see where we’ve come as a squad. It’ll be an interesting game.

“France have changed coaches, we don’t know who their new coach is yet, but their new structure will be in place so it’ll be an important game for them too as they’ll also be putting their structures into place. It’ll be a tough physical battle but one we’ll look forward to.

“It’s going to be a big week for Wrexham and for Wales. We want more and more people wanting to play and watch Rugby League in Wales. To have the Student Home Nations there is fantastic too.”

Wales’ full international season continues in the autumn with a Tri-Nations tournament against England and France and Harris is pleased with the commitment shown by all three countries as they all look to field their first choice line-ups.

“We spoke post-Four Nations about having a tough elite competition this season leading into the World Cup for our development and that probably ticks the box,” Harris said. “I know that England are going into it full guns blazing and will be fielding their best side. For us as a group it’s about progression, seeing that we’re good enough to compete against England and France, and seeing how we’ve progressed since the Four Nations.”

Details of ticket prices will be released next month.

Awards success for basketball development officer

March 26, 2012 by · No Comments · Sports, Student life

A sports development officer based at Glyndŵr University has seen his hard work pay off with awards success.

James Morgans has been basketball development officer based at the university for four years, co-ordinating the Athletic Union basketball programme and developing student talent.

Part of the programme involves getting students active in the local community, and James works with two local clubs including Mold Basketball Club.

The Flintshire-based club was set up in 2000 by James and his brother, and after 12 years of hard work it has become the largest registered basketball club in North Wales.

All of the hard work and dedication was rewarded recently when the club picked up Community Club of the Year at the Flintshire Sports Personality awards, held at Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold.

A spokesperson for Mold Basketball Club said: “We are proud to receive this award and are pleased that hard work does get recognised within the local sporting community. We would like to thank Flintshire Sports Development.”

Anna Marie Brown, sports facilities manager at Glyndŵr University said: “The award is recognition of all the hard work that goes on at the club, and we are delighted to have been able to support the fantastic work James has done at the university in recent years.”

Mold Basketball Club boasts teams at U12, U14, U16, U18 and local league senior levels, while newly formed this year are the National League Division 4 men’s team, featuring three current Glyndŵr University students.

The coaching staff also includes two recent university graduates.

Crusaders v Toulouse Olympique at Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium

March 20, 2012 by · No Comments · Sports

North Wales Crusaders take on top French side Toulouse Olympique in the third round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup this Saturday at the Glyndŵr University Racecourse Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm) and tickets are now on sale.

Following a directive received from the Rugby Football League at the end of last week, the club have been told that season tickets (except children’s) cannot be valid for use in round three of the cup so this is an all-pay match.

Chief executive Jamie Thomas said: “As a club we are disappointed at this decision as we had intended for season ticket holders to be admitted free using one of the special vouchers contained within the season ticket book, but we are no longer able to do this as the gate must be split with Toulouse.

“When we put the season tickets on sale we checked the operational guidelines, but there was no indication this was on the horizon. We then received notification AFTER the Round 3 draw had been made.

“Although season ticket holders will now have to purchase a ticket for Saturday, we want to compensate them for not being able to attend the game for free. Therefore we have decided to allow them to either exchange the special voucher for a free ticket to bring a friend to a future Championship One game – or the club will pay £20 towards a ticket for the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley, which will mean they can get into the game for just £6.”

Anyone who wishes to claim either benefit should contact info@crusadersrfl.com or call 0844 272 32 32.

Tickets for this Saturday’s Challenge Cup round three game against Toulouse Olympique XIII at the Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm) are now on sale. Tickets cost £11 in advance for adults, £7.50 for concessions or £5 for children. Go to www.crusadersrfl.com to buy tickets, or they can be purchased in person at the Glyndŵr University sports centre.

You said, we did – support for international students

March 20, 2012 by · No Comments · Student life

Glyndŵr University offers a wide range of support for international students.

We recognise the particular issues which can arise from moving to study away from your home country, and ofer help every step of the way.

Recently we’ve revamped the Moodle area for international students to include key information on studying and living in the UK.

It offers information on money management, emergency dentists, a guide to opening a UK bank account and a host of other aspects of life as an international student. There are even recipe ideas and cooking tips.

The changes are part of our You Said, We Did campaign to act on student feedback. The National Student Survey (NSS) is your chance to have your say on your experience of studying at Glyndŵr University.

Open to all final year undergraduate students, the NSS asks about all aspects of university life, from teaching and assessment to activities and support.

This year two Glyndŵr University students who complete the survey will win a fantastic iPad 2 (or cash equivalent).

As well as the chance to win a great prize, completing the survey means your voice will be heard and your feedback can be acted upon.

The simple message is ‘you said, we did’, and we want to keep on delivering for our students based on what they tell us. By completing the survey you will be helping the university to keep growing and providing the best possible student experience we can.
