DYNAMO ROLE MODELS OFFER ENTREPRENEURSHIP ADVICE

December 10, 2012 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

A mosaic artist, creative professional and founder of an illustration-based IT company spoke to students about opportunities for becoming self-employed and starting their own business when they graduate.

Tricia Jones, Huw Davies and Nicola Farrell spoke to students at Glyndŵr University as part of a Welsh Government initiative to take entrepreneurs’ stories into schools, colleges and universities to inspire young people.

The dynamo role models, as they are known under the scheme, passed on advice and tales of how they became self-employed, as well as answering questions from budding entrepreneurs.

Judith Alexander, Zone manager, organised the event. She said: “Entrepreneurship is becoming more and more important for graduates as they look to enter the world of work. Even if they don’t start up their own business, the skills and knowledge which they can gain from entrepreneurial activities will be vitally important to them.

“We were delighted to hear from Tricia, Huw and Nicola and I’m sure the students benefited tremendously from hearing from them.”

More than 365 business owners are involved as dynamo role models. The initiative is part of Big Ideas Wales.

STUDENTS PRACTISE VIDEO SKILLS AT WELSH LANGUAGE PUB

December 6, 2012 by · No Comments · Courses, Student life

Glyndŵr University journalism students took part in a live field exercise in Wrexham yesterday [Weds 5th] to practise their video reporting skills.

The second years, part of the Broadcasting and Journalism cohort, interviewed the co-operative behind the Welsh-language community pub, the Saith Seren. The work forms part of an online journalism portfolio about the pub to complete their first semester.

The Saith Seren opened in city-centre Wrexham earlier this year to promote the use of Welsh in Wrexham. The pub is a Grade II-listed heritage building and plans to open a new upstairs section early in 2013 for community events.

Marc Jones, Chair of the Saith Seren co-operative said, “Some students came to the pub the night before for a look around, which shows great initiative. They were involved and asked useful questions.”

He added: “The trick is to draw something out of the interviewee, so some needed to work on their angle.”

Gwenfair Jones, one of the directors of the group, said: “They asked good questions about the resurgence of the Welsh language and the role of the pub in that.”

She added: “My advice for some would be better prepared to start the interview and not keep interviewees waiting while they set up.”

Journalism student and Welsh speaker, Seren Worsely-Davies, said, “I got a bit of stage fright at first with a live interview on camera, but it was good experience and I got some good material for my portfolio.”

Multimedia Journalism lecturer, David Atkinson, said, “I think it live experience of handling interviews in the field in an invaluable part of the group’s journalism training.”

He added: “With journalism in turmoil post Leveson and pressure on young reporters ramping up year on year, I want exercises like this to prepare them for journalism in the real world.”

UPDATE: WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON SPORT

October 29, 2012 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

As the result of a matter raised via the Students’ Guild in respect of timetabled activity on Wednesday afternoons, the university has agreed the following:

1 – The Guild will work with the timetabling team to continue to resolve timetabling issues we are aware of regarding groups of students who have been timetabled for activity on a Wednesday afternoon.

2 – The timetabling team will use its best endeavours regarding the Semester Two timetable with a view to avoiding timetabling activity, where possible, on Wednesday afternoons.

3 – For academic year 2013/14, the university will look to more fully implement the existing timetable protocol, in consultation with the Students’ Guild, to avoid timetabling activity on Wednesday afternoons as far as possible.

The timetabling protocol for 2012/13 states Wednesday afternoons are ‘normally kept free of teaching where possible’. If you have specific issues regarding Wednesday afternoon timetabling, please raise this with the Students’ Guild in the first instance, who will work with the timetabling team in order to try and resolve issues.

FRAUD FACTS – STAY SAFE ONLINE

September 24, 2012 by · No Comments · Student life

Welcome to the new term! While it’s an exciting time for everyone at the university, Student Finance have asked us to remind students of the dangers of online fraud.

They’ve released the following wise advice which we’d encourage students to follow:

Top tips for identifying email fraud – phishing e-mails:

  • Student Finance England will never ask you to confirm your bank details or login information by email
  • Dear Student – phishing emails are usually sent out in bulk and are unlikely to contain your first or last names
  • Phishing scams are common at the three main installment payment dates in September, January and April
  • Be suspicious of any urgent requests for personal or financial information
  • Check the quality of the communication. Misspelling, poor punctuation and bad grammar are often tell-tale signs of phishing
  • If you believe that you have received a phishing e-mail your should let us know right away by e-mailing it to phishing@slc.co.uk
  • Lots more info about online safety here: http://bit.ly/OtWsQ2

Our top tips for social network safety:

  • Always create strong passwords for online accounts and update them regularly on social media sites. Longer passwords (8-10 characters) that contain letters, numbers and symbols are more secure. Avoid using the same password for multiple social media sites
  • Be cautious of the information you post publicly such as your Customer Reference Number, address or date of birth. Use the site’s privacy settings to limit who can see your personal information and posts
  • Be careful who you befriend. You put yourself at risk by not taking the time to filter who you accept into your inner circle. Friend requests can be used by social bots to hack your network and by phishers trying to steal your personal information
  • Stay up-to-date with changes to your social network’s settings as small changes can cause big problems. If a site decides to changes its privacy settings or policy this could leave your personal details more publicly available than they had been previously
  • Review your social media profiles. Always consider how others may view the information you provide about yourself, your family and your friends and remember that social media sites are public resources

CENTENARY CLUB – OUR NEW STUDENTS’ GUILD BAR

August 15, 2012 by · No Comments · Student life

The new Centenary Club students’ guild and matchday bar at the Glyndŵr University Racecourse Stadium is winning praise from football fans and students alike. We spoke to Phil Bennett, stadium operations manager, and students’ guild president Adam Fuller about how the bar was revamped and plans for its future.

Phil told us the atmosphere in the bar was a key consideration.

He said: “Once the decision was made to make the Centenary Club the student bar for Glyndŵr University the biggest challenge we faced was creating the right ambience. Obviously we wanted to make a big improvement on the facility which they held in the old students’ guild but we had to make sure it was also right for the sports fans who use the bar on match days at the stadium.

“Our potential customer base is extremely wide and we had to take this into account with all aspects of the stadium. So we have different zones, for example the main bar area, a games area and a quiet area, to accommodate large groups who want to socialise on a match day down to students who want to use the facility to enjoy a coffee while they’re studying. Even down to seemingly minor things like the drinks we stock behind the bar, we have had to think about all of our customers.

Adam said: “I think it’s hugely exciting for students. One of the best things about it is that it will help them to understand that the football stadium is owned by the university and here for them to use.

“Wrexham is a community football club run by the fans  – hopefully the partnership which we have with the football club through the stadium and the Centenary could create a few more Wrexham fans. If we give students the right sort of atmosphere and entertainment they’ll love it.

“There are so many great features it’s hard to pinpoint one in particular. On a very basic level there’s the layout. It’s quite spacious and we’ve got really long tables in the main bar area – this is great for encouraging people to socialise and meet new people. There’s also a full food menu which will be available from 12pm-7pm every weekday, and Sky Sports, which students didn’t have before on campus.

“Another major plus is the availability of cashback. We have lowered the bar to provide better accessibility for our disabled students and the Centenary has disabled toilets at ground floor level for the first time.”

With the beginning of the new academic year approaching, there are big plans for freshers’ activities in the bar.

Adam said: “We’re still finalising some of the details but so far it’s looking like the line-up will include an international DJ, hypnotist and a bhangra night, among other things. We want our international students to use the Centenary Club more frequently than they used the guild bar so we hope the bhangra night is the start of a regular series of events which they will enjoy.

“We’re planning a grand opening of the bar during the first few days of freshers’ week, details of which will be revealed in the coming weeks.”

WREXHAM SCIENCE FESTIVAL BREAKS RECORDS – AGAIN!

July 26, 2012 by · No Comments · Events

The record-breaking Wrexham Science Festival draws to a close on Friday.

This year’s festival has welcomed more than 4,000 visitors to the university for free events including TV’s Kate Humble in Conversation, The Chemistry of Cocktails and The Science of Doctor Who.

Along with visiting speakers from the wider world of science, university staff including Professor Vic Grout and Dr David Skydmore spoke about their own expertise to appreciative audiences.

Festival visitors came from across the country and the feedback has been really positive across the board – as ever the science festival has proven a great way to bring people in to the university and show off our facilities, expertise and partnerships with organisations including Airbus and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Events co-ordinator Katie Dutton said: “To break the festival attendance record once again is a fantastic reflection of the festival’s success in encouraging people to engage with science.

“Visitors of all ages have said they enjoyed themselves and were given fresh perspectives on everything from the search for life elsewhere in the universe to the debate over the relationship between science and religion.

“This year we lit up the police station tower in Wrexham, thanks to the innovative work of Mike Corcoran from Techniquest Glyndŵr, which was a great spectacle.

“I’d like to thank everyone across the university who has helped make the festival a success this year, and the many people who’ve come to our events.”
